I have a suspicion that it might be another case of front/back focus,
given that they describe the problem looking like the image is out of
focus.  At 2.8, it would take very little in the way of mis-focus for
a problem to show up.  They need to verify whether or not the lens has
a focus point somewhere other than where they think it is before
blaming it on some QC issue.  It might be the camera or the operator.
