Exactly.  This is what I found with my FA85 1.4 and my *istD.  It
looked in focus in the viewfinder, but the actual point of focus was
just a little behind.  If I used autofocus however, it was spot on.  I
had no problems with other lenses that I noticed, but then again, I
never did extensive testing on the others.   I had no problems with
focus with the 85 and my film cameras. This is why I wonder if
digital cameras have some type of intrinsic issue with differences in
viewfinder/CCD light paths?  They shouldn't, but so many people have
reported back/front focus issues that it makes you wonder.  Of course,
the ability to instantly magnify images to 100% on the screen and
beyond may be part of the problem.
