Ann,
I bought one for BO printing using Eboni Black ink from MIS Associtaes
(http://www.inksupply.com/). I found the Epson black ink had a slightly
bluish tinge to it, while the Eboni black is black :)
I'm printing on Epson Enhanced Matte, which is not archival quality,
more than meets my needs, and is quite inexpensive..
For detailed information on BO printing on the R220 take a look here
http://www.cjcom.net/articles/digiprn3b.htm
or check out the digital B&W printing group here:

I also have an Epson R300 which I use for colour priting, which happily,
uses the same cartridges as the R220 so I acquired a spare set with my
R220 purchase. I generally print colour on Epson Premium Lustre paper.
Hope that helps.
