because the sensor, the DSP, and the software make up the bulk of the cost of the camera. the 5D sensor is about half the size of the one planned for the *istD and cost goes up a lot faster than proportional to area. that means in the most optimistic case, the 645D sensor will cost Pentax about 2 times as much as the 5D sensor. that's not even figuring the cost advantage Canon has by being able to build their own sensors. Dalsa has a 25MP sensor that they won't quote a price for but they will admit is "over $5K" in OEM quantities. i figure that Kodak is charging Pentax between $1.5K-2K per sensor. that works out to a camera that streets for about $10K. that's about what using the rule of thumb of taking the equivalent film body cost and multiplying by 5 gives you too. $8K would be lowball.

Canon's selling the 5D for about 40% less than the 1D. The Pentax probably uses the chassis of the 645n and the autofocus software and hardware from the *ist D/Ds which should cut down on development costs considerably. Why shouldn't they be competitive.
