Most of the 35mm DSLRs available today are based on a Canon (Canon, Kodak) or Nikon (Nikon, Kodak, Fuji) platform. I think a big reason for it is because those are the lenses that most commercial or professional shooters use and they are most likely to buy a DSLR. It also explains why the most supported medium-format DSLR platforms are Hasselblad, Mamiya and Contax.Fuji does make and market DSLRs. I think the current one is the second generation. Of course I don't know much about it as it takes N***n lenses.
So for any other manufacturer like Pentax, it could be more of an uphill battle, I don't know how well the Sigma is doing but I read that the Contax N Digital was plagued with problems and generally a bad product. I think a Pentax DSLR will need to be marketed aggressively unless there are sufficiently die-hard Pentax supporters, or it turns out to be so good that the Canon and Nikon users are willing to invest in another system of bodies, lenses and accessories.
