Helene, as Ed Gibbs says, Popup Stopper from www.panicware.com is a fine
program.  I've had it for a long time.  I don't run it all the time, but
it's great to be able to turn it on if I'm visiting a site that starts
throwing popups at me.

You need to remember that while it's running you must hold down Shift to
open any new browser window.  So if you're on a site that opens all
links in a new window, nothing will happen if you don't press Shift.
