Quite offtopic since I have no knowledge of tracker/e-d-s internals but: Even on desktop people using outlook don't synchronize the entire corporate directory to a local database. You have "personal contacts" synchronized and the corporate directory is used via online LDAP searches. I would expect phones, tablets, etc to work the same way. Arjans 80K users in phonebook is still challenge that the PIM database should be able to handle gracefully (if not necessarily fast).
