In isolation, as an open source project, yes, it appears to be viable. The unknowns here in the USA are Apple and Google. Both have immense muscle to bring to bear in a competition and have strong existing products and business partnerships.

They could, I suppose, kill each other off and allow MeeGo to gain market share. But I'm not betting on that happening. If MeeGo's apps are better than Blackberry, Palm or Windows Mobile, there should be no problem establishing a market. But the apps have to be compelling - it can't be "just another smart phone".
