Brian,

I wonder if your problem was due to updated drivers in the 3400.

From the Apple 9.1 Install CD, the Before You Install read me says:
"* PowerBook 3400s running Mac OS 9.04
If you are installing Mac OS 9.1 on a PowerBook 3400 running Mac OS 9.04, you must perform the installation without updating your hard disk drivers or you may experience a hang during installation. To prevent the Installer from updating your hard disk drivers, click Options in the Install Software panel of the Mac OS 9.1 Installer and deselect the option to update your hard disk drivers."

I've never been able to get 9 to boot on my 3400c. I've always had to go back to 8.6 and then install 9 then upgrade to 9.1 and so on. This is with multiple copies of 9 so, to me, it's the fault of the os not the computer. I have read in the powerbook group that 9 is bootable but I never could get it to do this. I would suggest borrowing the 8.6 then upgrading to 9.

Thanks Patrick. The boot process was tried on a new drive with nothing installed on it. I had a couple of 9 cds, and neither worked, never got to any screen, as I recall. 8 worked fine from the cd. I should try to boot from the cd now, just to see if it works or not. I took the 3400c up to 9.1 or 9.11 and left it at that. 9.22 would never work at all. Thanks for the suggestion though.
