Wish I had my Mac handy because it would be much better while writing this email.
By the sounds of it, the computer is not just losing connection to web or mail but losing connection altogether. When this happens, taking a look at the network settings and finding out what the gateway is for your machine, and then sending it a few pings would be a good first step. If you can connect to the gateway, try doing a trace to the mail server or a different server to see if the connection breaks down somewhere else. I believe these are easiset to do from the terminal, which is not the best place for a novice user. If that doesn't help, resetting the modem and the computer sounds like an effort to release and or renew the computer's DHCP lease or reboot a modem in trouble. Does anyone know the right way to release and renew a DHCP lease on MacOS X? Deactivating the interface should send a release and reactivating it should force a renew... One tool I used to use on classic MacOS was IPNetMonitor, and the OS X version can be found here. The software is available as a 21-day demo. http://www.sustworks.com/site/downloads.html If the settings in Entourage work once, they should continue to work. If you lose connection to mail and not the web, try to see if you can ping the POP server. Another way to see if Rogers is having intermittent problems.
