My (layman's) understanding is that the VST SDK is incompatible with the GPL. I know that Wine is LGPL, so maybe because the DLL is being run under Wine and not LMMS directly it might be legally possible on platforms that use Wine to run Windows code. But the Windows version, which I assume opens the VSTs directly, couldn't then be distributed unless everyone who's ever contributed code to LMMS signed off on a special linking exception clause being added to the LMMS COPYING document, or to switch LMMS to the LGPL altogether. https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLIncompatibleLibs Or, someone could probably rewrite vst_base/vst_effect and license it under the LGPL, though I don't know whether that would be enough. Don't care much, either, since I don't use Windows myself. If there's a clean-room implementation of the VST API these days and you can find a suitable GPL-compatible example VST built with it, I take all this back, but I'm not aware of such a development.
