That assumes LMMS can load VST DLLs from a user's home directory.
Wine has access to root via the default mapping of the Z:\ drive. This has
been consistent for me on all Wine installations dating back nearly 10
years. So yes, i.e Z:\home\username\...

Since VSTs are so widely used, they have become in many ways the
replacement for soundfonts. Many of them are just wrappers around a
soundfont with some additional capabilities. I actually see many
professional composers using VSTs for things like electric guitars, music
boxes, detuned pianos (very cool btw).
There is of course the cliche synthesizers which work well for the "flavor
of the week" or "dance music" categories, but the ones I'm interested in
bundling would be a bit more conservative, such as the ones from
http://www.dskmusic.com/, where there's little doubt about what the plugin
does, but it provides a sound that isn't easily achievable with the
built-in instruments.
I do agree, TripleOsc and Zyn do wonders for LMMS. They're 90% of what I
compose with as well.
