Ok, I'm responding to my own post here:

I think this does a good job of explaining it.  It's the steinberg header
files (required for compilation) which break GPL and are mandatory for
compilation.

This means no VSTs that use the steinberg sdk (most likely all VSTs on the
market) can be bundled, correct?

Does this mean VSTs will never (ever) ship with LMMS?  Wouldn't LinuxVST
have the same limitations?  Or have programmers reverse-engineered enough
to make a working, usable sdk that is compatible with GPL?

I know these are a lot of questions, but if it's not possible, then we
might as well extinguish the idea now, right?
