Here's a little mockup of what I envision would capture the spirit of
the C-64:

This is just an example, and the knobs could be made differently, or a
different colour used (we have 16 options!) but it shows the general
idea: C-64 font, no antialiasing for anything, black background... the
knobs would probably have to be a bit smaller, to make room for the
waveform selector. The waveform buttons should look like C-64 sprites,
which is easy to do - just use the palette and draw without
anti-aliasing. This also is missing the row that has the global volume,
filter etc. controls, but that shouldn't be a big thing to do once the
layout is figured out.

The knob lines can't be made without antialiasing, since they're drawn
by LMMS, but that's a minor concern IMO. (I could always tweak the knob
code to add the option though...)

I'm attaching a convenient GIMP palette I made which is as close to an
authentic C-64 palette as you can get with modern hardware. Also I
posted a link to the font earlier, but here it is again, it's free to
use for any purpose suits our needs:
http://www.dafont.com/commodore-64-pixelized.font In GIMP, it works best
by setting the size to 10px and switching off both hinting and antialiasing.
