sudo apt-get purge openoffice.org-ure openoffice.org*-debian-menus
tar xvf <tar file>
cd <language>/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i ./*.deb ./desktop-integration/*.deb

course possible to uninstall any software on Ubuntu.
I prefer running "synaptic" as root via command line, search the

packages and uninstall them.

yes it should be. There are some instructions available somewhere ...
Easiest way is to cleanup the system first and remove LibreOffice and
other older OpenOffice packages coming from the system. LO hijacked
OpenOffice package names and other things :-( They argued that we
had no
official release bla bla bla.
