I agree with Hoss's boxed new opinion (BTW I didn't know we could do that in
JIRA markup). Thus * isn't quite exactly [* TO *] when NaN exists.
We needn't give up on our wish to use DocValuesFieldExistsQuery for a range
syntax. We can produce a BooleanQuery with MUST clause
DocValuesFieldExistsQuery and a MUST_NOT on NaN.
