I believe that is the only backwards incompatibility that was introduced by the
reverted patch.
Unless I am mistaken, {{numeric:*}} is equivalent to an "exists" query, even
for float/doubles, so there should be no issues formalizing that. This "exists"
query will return true even for {{NaN}} values, which is backwards compatible
with the old trie fields.
And I'm onboard now with Hoss's suggestion. Will work on another patch soon.
