Yeah, it looks like {{NaN}} used to be treated as a missing field. Switching to
{{DocValuesFieldExistsQuery}} caused the [* TO *] query to treat NaN like any
other numeric value.
Seeing here https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-3582 it looks like the
expected behavior of numericField:* is not to return any NaN values, which
makes it not really an existence query... This complicates things, and doesn't
really let us use the {{DocValuesFieldExistsQuery anymore.}}
