Ah, you are right that the Lucene binary release tarball actually contains the
javadoc (like the Solr binary tarball used to earlier). For Solr we replaced
that with a link to the online docs page long ago. But there's no ASF
requirement to publish html javadoc or to do so on ASF servers. So if we
continue to ship compiled javadocs in the binary tarball as today, it should be
doable to rely on an external host for the online version and have one less
site publishing challenge.
Would be kind of cool to setup a javadoc.apache.org service that does exactly
what the javadoc.io service does, for all Apache projects (automatically
pulling xxxx-javadoc.jars from maven on demand). Perhaps Max Zhu, the developer
of javadoc.io would like to open source his code?
