Andy and Ken, thanks! I suspect you are are both entirely correct. Andy,
I coincidently cleared my cache the day before when I quit, but not
cookies. I thought I had a cookie control extension loaded, but see I need
to find one I like. I'll clear cookies (though I hate losing the ones I
accept as useful).

The ads I saw may be web clips, but they definitely weren't targeted (which
I thought *all *google ads were, but I'm probably wrong). These were
placed and behaved differently than expected, not at all like I expected
under Chrome or Mozilla.

I've seen the one-line ads before, near the top, but actually slightly
separated from the mail pane and also separate from the context buttons
above the mail pane. Those ads are also colored (these were bone white and
not the 3-5% blue of the rest of the pane). There are also ads to the side
in the reading pane and are targeted based on data Google has on me. These
two are quite familiar to me. There's even a one-liner at the bottom of
the reading pane )this time for business cards).
