Maybe they were ads, or WebClips. For several years, Gmail has had Web Clips and one-line advertisement links, which appear above the top of your message list, below the toolbar buttons. I find they are not always there. Usually I have only one, not two. I also don't use the tabbed inboxes. In case your Gmail display got somewhat jumbled, try clearing the web browser's cookies and cache, which will force new code to load next time.
