Great analysis, Stefano. I am not sure that your fix is in the right 
place. I think that the underlying problem is in FeatureTypeRegistry and 
that somehow this feature type is being built without the user data 
being set on its descriptor. I would like to know why.

A feature type is a complex type and it should be perfectly valid to use 
it in a mapping as a complex property. I have confirmed that this works 
with the app-schema tutorial by removing the mapping file for 
gsml:MappedFeature and adding a mapping for 
gsml:occurrence/gsml:MappedFeature/gml:name in the gsml:GeologicUnit 
mapping file.
