The main reason seems indeed being able to build 32 bit software where a 32 bit toolchain would run into address space limitations. Those who suffer most currently are browser folks, who resorted to some tricks and workarounds[1] to stay afloat a little longer. FWIW, the problem is not limited to Linux[2].
