I do not “want to use PTB” for Brazilian Portuguese. I simply want to no use an
extension that conflicts with ISO 639-1.
This means that BR cannot be used because it is already assigned to a different
language. PTBR (PTB for short 8.3 filename compatibility) was suggested/used by
an individual providing translations for that language. However, it is the only
language translation at present which uses 3-4 characters for the language code
in FreeDOS. If we really want to only have a two letter code for PT-BR, I
suggest using BZ. It is not assigned in the ISO standard and does not conflict.
But, users may not find it when they are expect it when looking for PTBR.
If a program cannot use a three character language code, that is not a problem
with the language code. It is a problem with the program and should be fixed
there.

lists the different languages, abbreviations, codepages and possibly any
related notes for the various languages in use by FreeDOS.
It would could something like this:

I think a simple doc like that would be help to language contributors and users
