Same issue. I brought this up on the mailing list some time ago, this is 
what Raster had to say about it.

Personally, I wasn't able to get anywhere with it and ended writing a wrapper 
in C for the command $sudo pm-suspend I call esuspend. That really is 
re-inventing the wheel though. I suppose I can  be lazy.
