I've done some work with Omeka (www.omeka.org) as a front-end to DSpace. Omeka supports OAI import so you can spend all you time on fixing the presentation (not worrying about doing the metadata import).

We're looking at using Drupal as a front-end to Dspace repositories and I can't help but think we're not the only ones. Anybody out there doing something like this? We're think of Drupal as primarily a presentation layer to make some collections prettier and interactive but wouldn't be opposed to Islandora scale functionality.
