I don't know how to by-pass the build stage error but it seems that even 
the latest upstream AMD drivers (11.11) are still having problems with 
gnome-shell and gnome3 as you say :-(

Radeon driver should work smoothly and out-of-the-box, if it does not, 
reporting would be the (only?) way to go.
