Since 2013 I'm preaching on every DebConf I attended in each of my Debian Med related events about https://salsa.debian.org/med-team/community/MoM/-/wikis/Mentoring-of-the-Month-(MoM) The idea is to help newcomers to package what they need. I wished other teams would try to adopt this method. As a very new contributor to Debian as part of the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) '25 program I can only second Andreas' point. Packages / package teams who are willing/have the bandwith to mentor newcomers are most certainly a great starting point for newbies. Is there an easy way to find those mentorship opportunities in Debian (outside of dedicated programs like GSoC)? IMHO these should be "advertised" to newcomers.
I have started a new wiki page for this purpose https://wiki.debian.org/NewcomersIf your team can mentor newcomers, please add yourself. I added gitlab team to get things started as I am happy to mentor new comers to join gitlab team. Packaging may be a git complicated, but testing upgrades is an easy way to contribute.
