Not really, we can't modify Lenny's dpkg. Furthermore the sane coexistence
with other patch system rely on the fact that dpkg-source does nothing
with the content of debian/patches unless there's a series file.

Otherwise switching to the new format by default would break many more
packages.

Well, there's only one upstream source code and all patches we use
should end up applied on it.
