dpkg-source reimplements basic quilt functionalities to be able to work without it (patch application/addition of a new patch at the end) and uses quilt opportunistically when it's available... if you change the logic of quilt wrt series files, both won't be in sync and you can expect problems. The documented behaviour of dpkg-source will not match reality depending if quilt is installed or not. > > What for?
