From what you write it seems more like a problem related to the video card driver or firmware, minor in Debian unstable or testing for more updated drivers, kernel and firmware and in which it works fine at least if you don't use graphics hw acceleration, perhaps these logs could give some useful information, take them after freeze on xorg session with hw acceleration, the first one: "cinnamon":

dmesg > ~/freeze-dmesg.log
journalctl -b > ~/freeze-journal.log
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > ~/freeze-xorg.log
