So, there was a fix for this upstream - but when I tested it, it seemed
to work, BUT I needed to open the preferences dialog and press ok in it
before the toolbar buttons also would work to click properly. I have of
course opened an issue in the geeqie github about this [1].

I could provide a package with this fix applied, but I rather wait to
see if there's a fix for this new problem that I reported, so that the
fix for your originally reported problem is FULLY fixed.
