As you most probably have noticed, I have forwarded this bug upstream, and I have found the commit [1] that looks like it is the cause of the problem, and it seems like it is part of the coming (sooner or later) migration to GTK4, which if I am not mistaken doesn't have a toolbar implementation, which means that if the functionality is to be kept, it needs to be implemented in another way. I don't know really if the toolbar will be kept, or what the plan is, and this could be a reason that this hasn't been moved forward more.
