They are not. Automated updates are run daily via CRON, while the logrotate file installed by unattended-upgrades is set for monthly rotates. This is precisely why since the logging functions have been re-writen, we get daily e-mails that show upgrades logs starting the previous months, instead of since the last time unattended-upgrades was executed (which tends to be yesterday, since we use cron.daily).
