I've just realised that in wheezy-backports (but not in Jessie) you need to install "python-imaging" to enable PNG and JPEG encodings. This is because "python-imaging" has been changed to "python-pil" which is not available on Wheezy. I will correct that problem by adding "python-imaging" as alternative to "python-pil" with next upload to backports.
