I'm back on the original machine, and the original packagesearch
instance still displays the same bad behavior. I've checked all the
tabs, and also tried fiddling with it, but no luck.

On the other hand, when I start a new packagesearch, it works fine, and
I am unable to make it misbehave--even by selecting and then deselecting
tags.

I will leave the original instance up, in case you or I think of
something useful to do with it (e.g., I could attach a debugger, though
I don't know if it would do much good).
