Unfortunately this is not an option, as it would greatly reduce the
value of the program. For example I often use it while searching for
depricated packages using orphaner. I always look what is in the package
before I unistall. If I would lock the database I would need to close
packagesearch everytime I want to install or uninstall a package. There
are other cases where I would consider this to be really annoying.

You are right synaptic for example does set a lock.
