I have a possible clue: maybe this is some interaction with package installation. I had the problem happen again, and it was while I was doing an apt-get dist-upgrade (specifically, while it was doing all the installs).
I had a tag selected (ftp). Search in description was off. I entered jade in the search string. Nothing showed up. Realizing my error, I shift-clicked on the tag, but still nothing showed. Clear search and reentering jade also didn't help. I tried to reproduce this in a new instance of package search and could not.
