This is what I was hoping for, thanks!

In the meantime, I found a way to do what I wanted by

- extracting the DOI from the first page of the PDF using pyPDF(2) (see,
http://blog.kzfmix.com/entry/1270555516) 
- adding an entry by using the AppleScript import command with the found DOI
- adding the PDF to the new entry...

All this as an AppleScript that is triggered by a Hazel rule if a PDF is
added to a specific folder. So far, it works good.
