I think you are getting confused with some aspect of how the Mail gets sent (SMTP Process).
in MT lingo... smtp server = it can be your mail server (the one that has the receiving email account) which can also be a 'Relay' server if it does not have the receiving email account and it is supposed to forward the mail to the end mail server in the chain. SPF records are used by the receiving mail server to determine validity of email vs spam etc... If you are asking about why you have to configure Authentication ? the answer is you don't ... if the mailserver listed in the smtp server is the final receiving mail server. Regards.
