I don't live in a sanctuary city, so I can speak for what has happened
there now or in the past - or ascribe intention. My main issue is the way
ICE, and those in charge of ICE, are conducting themselves. There is the
performative aspect of it - if you really want to catch a bunch of
criminals you don't make a big show in advance about how you're going into
an area. Once you've done this a majority of the actual criminals are
already gone or laying low, so you're much less likely to catch them (we
want to catch criminals to hold them accountable and/or deport them). What
you're left with is harassing, detaining (or worse) people who are
non-criminal illegals, legal immigrants, US citizens, and everywhere in
between - many of whom are in the process of trying to be here legally.
Then there is how they are stepping all over the constitution, which should
worry everyone, not just people who are here illegally. We let the feds
establish these agencies in the wake of 9/11 and should have kept much
better oversight of them - every president and congress member between then
and now has contributed to this - now we're reaping the whirlwind.
