Okay, finished re-install of Ubuntu 8.04. Still need to get my updates but sound does work. It seems that the hardware buttons on the T43 are independent of volume settings in ALSA. I do recall that I had muted the volume using these buttons when the computer was last in Vista...didn't expect the setting to carry over into another OS but it is clearly firmware controlled.
