The quick&dirty solution that worked for me, as I did not find the older kernel-packages anymore, was to copy a newer initrd and System.map in /boot and also the correspondig /lib/modules/2.6.24xx directory to the file name the post-installation script missed, then uninstalled the ubuntu-modules and then removing the copied files. You have to be very careful not removing your current kernel with that method.
