Followed what was suggested here, https : //
askubuntu.com/questions/1514649/microphones-dont-work-
after-24-04-upgrade and now the mic works, even after a reboot! In short

> mv ~/.local/state/wireplumber ~/.local/state/wireplumber.orig
> pavucontrol
to verify the mic is still working and then
> arecord -vv -f dat /dev/null
to see the mic volume changing. (I find it difficult to believe that in 2025
KDE / Plasma still doesn't display the mic input values like Gnome does!)

The directory ~/.local/state/wireplumber has been recreated but with
only default-routes and restore-stream . These are identical to the
files that were present before, but in the .orig directory these files
also exist: bluetooth-autoswitch, default-nodes, default-profile and
stream-properties Not sure which file(s) are breaking the mic, but I'll
attach all of them
