I gave up on nvidia a very long time ago. They are no longer in the market
of graphics card. They're building servers now. I understand that guys at
Ubuntu can still patch the kernal to work with the older graphics cards but
that musr have downsides we don't know about. It's not always lazy
sometimes they have new features or security concerns that priorities over
legacy support.

But you're right there's no such utility for checking if older drivers will
run and what is involved to make it run. It could be helpful for those
writing the kernels. But it's too complicated to write such tool and
require and understanding of kernels and drivers which is too much for one
person.

Usually it's either 🤷 writing kernels or writing drivers. And since the
nvidia driver is closed source, they don't really know what's in it so they
have to guess and hope for the best.

They whole thing is too much work. For very little gain. But again if all
open source os are united then it is a fair shot at reducing redundancy and
making sure the effort is serving more and more people. Your idea is great
but even if it was implemented in ubuntu it will not work with other
kernels. You need to do it all the kernels. Too much work.
