Public bug reported:

After an Unattended_update for USN-7548-1 mariadb fails to start. 
Unattended-upgrades-dpkg.log reports
"Could not execute systemctl:  at /usr/bin/deb-systemd-invoke line 148"

systemd status mariadb reports "[ERROR] Plugin 'InnoDB' registration as a
STORAGE ENGINE failed" and
"[ERROR] Unknown/unsupported storage engine: InnoDB" among other things.
lsb_release -rd
No LSB modules are available.
