I tested the fix using ubuntu-release-upgrader from plucky-proposed:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ apt policy ubuntu-desktop-minimal ubuntu-desktop
ubuntu-desktop-minimal:
Installed: 1.543
Candidate: 1.543
Version table:
*** 1.543 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu oracular/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
ubuntu-desktop:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 1.543
Version table:
1.543 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu oracular/main amd64 Packages
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ do-release-upgrade --proposed -f DistUpgradeViewGtk3
[...]
At no point did the error window pop up. After the upgrade:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grep "failed to mark" /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grep "need_server_mode" /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log
So, no problematic errors were seen.
