Interesting when you log into gnome-shell on Xorg that the Xorg server
then reports all its input devices are being removed(!). So it sounds
like either a VT switch is happening at the wrong time (after the gnome-
shell user session has started), or that gnome-shell is frozen, or both.
This might also explain why we see the graphics-related errors "Failed
to open sliced image: Operation was cancelled".

Next time the problem happens, please try switching to a VT and the
force gnome-shell to dump core:

  killall -USR1 gnome-shell

Then hopefully we will get a crash report created in /var/crash/
