I too am having this issue. I have a Gateway 7405 with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. It randomly freezes when running compiz. I tried turning off the animations and right after I did that, I changed desktops and it froze again. I also notice it happens a lot when I try to drag the cube around... I turned that off and now I will wait and see if that helps. It seems like there is an unusually large amount of laptop users with this problem... One other silly idea I have is to try settings other than the custom ones. Go with the preset settings and see what happens. I will try that next if this does not work. I will go to no compiz if it is still doing it after that. I will post with my results.
