I have had the same problem and boy am I vex. I spent a lot of time getting my desktop just how I wanted it. I downloaded the last set of updates and pow! my beautiful 3d cube desktop is broken. It initiates on logon ok bu as soon as I try to rotate the desktop it just reverts to a non-3d, non transparent, non rotating desktop. I fine that in "Apperances" it is set to no effects and if I change it (to custom) and reload my effects profile, I only have to rotate my mouse wheel or move to the edge of the screen for it to revert again :( I ran compiz --replace and got this.............
